Lock and Talk Virginia E-Newsletter April 2022

E-Newsletter April 2022

May Mental Health Awareness Month is quickly approaching! This year, Lock and Talk’s theme is “Speak Up for Mental Wellness” to encourage individuals and communities to start a conversation on the importance of mental wellness. Similarly to last year’s campaign, Region 1 has been working closely with RGC to develop new social media graphics, radio ad, an animated video, press release and a social media toolkit that will be available to all Lock and Talk partners! Stay tuned for more information and access to materials!

Lock and Talk Virginia is excited to bring to our communities an important community discussion around men’s mental health. We will be joined by James Harris of Men to Heal and Gary Taylor of Uphold 31:8.

Gary T. Taylor is a LCSW, providing individual therapy to Black Men. He is also an author and podcaster, with over 11 years of experience in the field of Mental Health. Learn more about the exciting work he does in his community here: https://www.uphold318.com/

Both James and Gary will be speaking with our community on the importance of men’s mental health, particularly among black men. After their presentation, we welcome community discussion and Q&A.

Lock and Talk Partner Highlights

We love to see the work all of our partners are doing with Lock and Talk Virginia in their communities. We wanted to take a minute to highlight some of that work and share it with you here. We will be working to highlight work from each of our partners each month!

Congratulations to Sherry Norton-Williams, Prevention Specialist, Rappahannock Area Community Services Board, for being recognized as the top Mental Health First Aid trainer in Virginia at NatCon 2022. Thus far in FY 2022, Sherry has certified 506 new Mental Health First Aiders! Sherry has been teaching MHFA since 2016 and is certified in Adult, Youth, Public Safety, and Higher Education. Sherry quickly made the pivot to virtual instruction in 2020 and continues to collaborate with instructors across Virginia. Region 1 is so grateful for Sherry’s dedication, collaboration, and support!
Lexington Mayor, Frank Friedman, recognized Lock and Talk at VFW Post 1499’s  95th Anniversary Event on April 9. (The shout  out was an unexpected and welcome surprise!) Senator Creigh Deeds and Congressman Ben Cline spoke about the importance of peer support, VFWs as hubs for connectivity between veterans and families, and the importance of mental and behavioral health support in Virginia.
Thanks to the support of our partners in Hanover, we also recently created a specific Lock and Talk brochure for ID/DD populations, aimed at professionals working with that population and how best to intervene in a crisis. This brochure is set up to add in your logo and contact information on a side panel so that you may distribute this among your organization and community partners.
