The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) is pleased to announce the following on-line training opportunity at no cost to providers:

 

What: Ethics for Behavioral Health Practitioners CE Bundle (see below for details)

Who: Any licensed, licensed eligible or Qualified Mental Health Professional behavioral health provider in Virginia who works with children/adolescents or adults

When: Training must be completed between May 1 and September 30, 2020.  Registration closes on May 31st or when training is full.

 

Please use the following link to register for the training: https://virginiatech.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3L6dk8ulecsXk0J.  Once you are registered for the training, you will receive an email with a link from Relias. You will have until September 30, 2020 to complete one or more ethics courses in the bundle. After you finish your course(s), please email a copy of your certificate to Lisa Roland at lroland@vt.edu .  You will also receive a short survey following your participation to gauge the helpfulness of the training in your profession.

 

Training Details

Ethics plays a significant role in the behavioral health field. With the recent movement towards integrated care, practitioners are expected to be more cognizant of legal and ethical risks that may arise in their practice. This bundle will address common ethical topics practitioners face and provide strategies for handling ethical issues. Client privacy and confidentiality, HIPAA, therapeutic boundaries, telehealth guidelines, and dual relationships will be covered. The bundle includes training on the following:

  • Ethical and Legal Guidelines for Telehealth (1.0 hour)
  • Ethical Decision-Making (1.25 hours)
  • HIPAA and Behavioral Health (2.0 hours)
  • Legal and Ethical Standards of Care in Behavioral Health (2.0 hours)
  • Navigating the Ethics of Dual Relationships for Clinicians (2.0 hours)
  • Therapeutic Boundaries (1.0 hour)

This bundle is designed to serve as a guide to help practitioners understand the law and make ethical decisions, helping them avoid disciplinary actions and claims of malpractice. The package offers over 9 online CE hours and completion certificates from the American Psychological Association, the Association of Social Work Boards, and the National Board for Certified Counselors.
