Chesterfield County Community Services Board is proud to announce that we were recognized by The National Association of Counties for our Safe Storage and Disposal Campaign.  During February and March of 2018, Chesterfield County Prevention and the SAFE (Substance Abuse Free Environment) Coalition worked to raise awareness about the risk of prescription drug use/misuse in adolescents and young adults through a multi-faceted, coordinated community-wide campaign. The goal of the campaign was to provide information about the importance of properly disposing and storing prescription medication and increase awareness of and access to safe storage and disposal methods. The first part campaign encouraged citizens to pick up free medication disposal pouches throughout the county and culminated with a Medication Take-Back event, hosted by the Chesterfield County Police Department. The second part of the campaign focused on delivering locking medicine cases, stuffed with education materials, to Dr. offices in order to inform patients about the importance of securing medications that are in the home. This campaign filled in a gap for a coordinated approach in increasing community awareness of this topic and distributing safe storage and disposal information and resources to citizens through multiple partners in locations across the county.
